Our strategy for achieving this is to create value for shareholders and society in a sustainable way by developing, building, operating and investing in the electricity infrastructure and businesses needed in the transition to net zero.

This includes onshore and offshore wind farms, hydro schemes, electricity transmission and distribution networks, flexible power stations, carbon capture and hydrogen storage, solar, and battery storage, as well as providing energy products and services for businesses and other customers.

To help us do this, we're investing £20.5bn in homegrown energy. Actions not ambitions will secure our energy future.

At SSE, we take a Whole Systems approach to enable customers to decarbonise heat, transport and energy systems. We own and operate 18 heat networks across England and Scotland and have an ambitious project pipeline under development that is pioneering innovation in heat distribution including capturing heat from data centres, deep geothermal, electricity network transformers and energy from waste plants.

What’s certain is that the towns and cities of the future will need to incorporate heat network zoning as part of their local area energy plans.

At SSEN Transmission, we’re responsible for the electricity transmission network in the north of Scotland. We’re on a mission to revolutionise Scotland's energy landscape by upgrading the grid in the north of Scotland to bring cleaner energy to homes and businesses across the country. SSE’s aim is to accelerate technologies to higher readiness levels for deployment, learn from other utilities and industries and mitigate the risks of implementation of new technologies. SSE is a founding member of two National Demonstration Research Centres and leading industry projects such as Project LEO and Electricity Transmission Collaboration Panel, through which the businesses are able to manage trials to test and scale new solutions.

We operate in some of the UK and Ireland’s most remote areas which are home to a wide variety of valuable ecosystems and habitats. We have robust environmental governance and policies in place and work constructively with a wide range of stakeholders to produce sustainable environmental outcomes.

As a large energy company, the scale and breadth of SSE’s activities mean that we naturally interact with the environment in many ways, presenting challenges that need to be managed. Our most material environmental impact is the carbon emitted when generating electricity. To address this we are taking steps to significantly reduce our impact on climate change and our business model is focused around supporting the transition to low-carbon electricity systems in the UK and Ireland. We have an ambitious £12.5bn capital investment plan to accelerate progress towards net zero over the five years up to 2026, the majority of which will go to low-carbon infrastructure.
